Why do we do such things? :o((

I purchased a lathe the other day, almost in a box! I purchased it unseen for silly (low money) and it duly arrived. I am now in the process of rebuildung it and making it like new (well almost). These lathes have been made by the same company since the early/late, ninteen fourties and the design hasn`t changed much, if at all, over the years! Sure, there is a much sought after Super seven version but mine is a simple Myford ML7, which when finished, will more than adequately do the job that I want it to do!

No! Unfortunately this isn`t the one, but gives some indication as to what it should look like when its finished! Mine is actually below, sitting on the floor of my workshop looking very sad and sorry for itself, with bits missing like the Apron assembly. The light switch which currently controls the motor (not good practice) has to go, and the wiring which can be seen hanging off the bed, has all three wires fused togeather, indicative of a major "short" or at the very least, a general failure of the motor in some way! Hmmmmmm!

OK! I have stripped it down and started to check tolerences (which aren`t too bad for an old Lathe) I have taken delivery of the new Apron assembly (OUCH!!!!) and the paint, and have cleaned off the old paint and prepped the chassis/bed! Tomorrow I will start to prime the body, And Joy of Joys I don`t need a new motor (not yet anyway) I have now stripped it off the lathe and disassembled it, given it a general cleaning out, checked the bearings, and after oiling, replacing the old wire with the correct size and type of wire, it started as smoothly as a swiss watch with the addition of being very powerfull, so thats good news!

I bought a wood lathe 4 years ago, that sat in storage since then, can't wait to set it up and learn how to use it!

Hi Rhianna! thanks for the visit!hows the new mooring coming on? have you found one yet? if so is it close to the old one. re the wood lathe, a great starting block (no pun intended ) is to get some fruit wood and "turn" out actual fruit, apple, cherry, orange peach etc. leather makes good leaves drilled into the ends and for the stalk! they sell quite well over here too, finished with hard wax!

Hi Rob, no news yet on mooring. We do have one place in mind that is not far from here but have to wait until the sale of this place goes through(end of March) before we approach them. We would have to start another company and lease the space as a business with the home as the "office". Time will tell, fingers crossed. The only drawback with the other place is it is directly at the end of a runway at the airport so lots of LOUD noise on a constant basis. Not good for someone who loves peace and quiet, I don't even play the radio in my home, prefer the quiet so I can think. But beggars can't be choosers, I'll be happy enough to keep my house.

Keeping the house is the main thing! until some other better place comes along, in a nicer area! maybe get off the grid! solar panels, wood stoves, boil your water, etc? All sounds great to me maybe, tow your house out into the backwoods somewhere and live Free! Wow! way to go! the nearest thing to heaven for me! other than sailing a boat long distance! :o)) take care! Best of luck!
