Afterhearing that many cities did not want to offend other cultures by puttingup Xmas lights, so DIDN'T! Afterhearing that the Birmingham council changed its opinion and let a Muslim woman have her picture on her driver's licence with her face covered. Afterhearing of a Primary School in Birmingham where a boy was told that forPE they could wear Football League shirts (Aston Villa, Birmingham, WestBrom etc) but NOT an England shirt as it could offend others ! This prompted the editorial belowwritten by a UK citizen. Published in a British tabloid newspaper.
IMMIGRANTS.NOT BRITONS, MUST ADAPT. Take It Or Leave It. I am tired of this nation worrying about whether we are offending some individual or their culture. Since the terrorist attacks on London , we have experienced a surge in patriotism by the majority of Brits. However, the dust from the attacks has barely settled and the 'politically correct' crowd begin complaining about the possibility that our patriotism is offending others.I am not against immigration, nor do I hold a grudge against anyone who is seeking a better life by coming to Britain . However, there are a few things that those who have recently come to our country, and apparently some born here, need to understand. This ideaof London being a multicultural centre for community has served only to dilute our sovereignty and our national identity. As Britons, we have our own culture, our own society, our own language and our own lifestyle. This culture has been developed over centuries of wars, struggles, trials and victories fought by the untold masses of men and women who laid down their lives and one of the millions of men and women who have sought freedom. We speakENGLISH, not Spanish, Lebanese, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Russian, or any other language. Therefore, if you wish to become part of our society, learn the language!
'In God We Trust' is our National Motto. This is not some Christian, right wing, political slogan. We adopted this motto because Christian men and women, on Christian principles, founded this nation, and this is clearly documented. It is certainly appropriate to display it on the walls of our schools. If God offends you, then I suggest you consider another part of the world as your new home, because God is part of our culture. If the St.George's cross offends you, or you don't like its use ' A Fair Go', then you should seriouslyconsider a move to another part of this planet. We are happy with our culture and have no desire to change, and we really don't care how you did things where you came from. This is OUR COUNTRY, OUR LAND, and OUR LIFESTYLE, and we will allowyou every opportunity to enjoy all this. But once you are done complaining, whining, and griping about Our Flag, OurPledge, Our National Motto, or Our Way of Life, I highly encourage you to take advantage of one other great British freedom, 'THE RIGHT TO LEAVE'. We didn'tforce you to come here. If you don't like it GO HOME!! You asked to be here. So accept the country YOU accepted. Pretty easy really when you think about it. I figure if we all keep passing this to our friends(and enemies) it will also, sooner or later get back to the complainers, lets all try, please. I agree with much of this, except that I do not define myself as a
'Brit' or 'British'.
I am English.
It is a sad reflection of our times that, although I am forced to hold a
British passport, I would prefer not to. The reason? Anyone can become
British. It has become devalued and worth nothing. You don't have to
speak English and we are told that we have to 'respect other cultures'.
This really means that anyone else's culture is deemed to be more
important, more deserving of consideration, than our own English
culture. A directive recently went out to NHS staff and GPs that
travellers and gipsies should be allowed to 'jump the queue' or be seen
without appointments, being attended to before anyone else. This is a
basic affront to the English idea of 'fairness' and is just one more
example.
I was recently told (by whom I shall not reveal) that as a woman I
should 'lower my gaze' i.e. not meet another person's eyes especially
not a man's. This would be in the name of 'modesty'. Well, in my
ancient English culture, I look another person fairly and squarely in
the face when speaking to him/her. This shows that I am open and honest
and I expect fair dealing, as I offer fair dealing to others. And I
shall not allow anyone else to impose their views, opinions or standards
on me.
Yesterday, reporting of the anniversary of the 7th July London bombings
was largely overshadowed by another 'memorial service' in the USA to
some pop star or other. Most of us will remember what we were doing on
that July morning, where we were. Thank God we weren't in London! One of
the bombers was born in a maternity hospital where I used to work, St
Luke's in Bradford, and they'd all lived in and around the areas of
Leeds where my Victorian ancestors lived. Another of them went to the
same school as my son-in-law and close to where my eldest granddaughter
lives now. This all rings much louder bells than the antics of the pop
music industry.
I shall not surrender.
Margaret
